Collision on 2nd Avenue

Police believe that a man on drugs is responsible for a serious collision that left two people injured.

At approximately 2:56 p.m. the suspect was driving a black Volvo station wagon southbound in the 2200 block of 2nd Avenue and collided into a parked car, a Mazda 4-door sedan. A postal service truck was parked in front of the Mazda and a postman was standing at the back of his truck in between the Mazda and the postal vehicle. When the suspect struck the Mazda it was pushed forward into the back of the postal truck, pinning the postman in between the Mazda and the postal truck. The suspect then backed up and fled the scene proceeding southbound on 2nd Avenue toward Blanchard Street.

Just south of 2nd Avenue and Blanchard Street a witness in a pickup truck blocked the suspect in, preventing him from fleeing any further.

Sometime after the initial collision a female witness approached the suspect’s vehicle on foot and verbally engaged the suspect. As the suspect fled the scene, the female witness got caught on the suspect’s vehicle and fell down, injuring her hip.

Both the postal employee, a man in his 50′s, and the female victim were transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Responding officers arrived at 2nd and Blanchard and took the suspect into custody. The suspect was transported to the West Precinct where he is being evaluated for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

There were no citations issued at the scene, which is standard procedure in serious traffic collisions requiring extensive follow up investigation and collision reconstruction.

Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives are on scene and continue to actively investigate.
